Why Maple Syrup Is Vegan? Let’s Find Out!

  •

Is Maple Syrup Vegan?

Maple syrup is 100% vegan because it doesn’t contain animal ingredients. But, some brands of maple syrup may be made from honey, which contains trace amounts of beeswax.

It is vegan because it is a plant-based product. It is closer to honey than regular syrup corn syrup with artificial flavours and colours.

Some brands may contain gelatin. If you want to be 100% vegan, look for maple syrup made from sugarcane juice instead of sugar.

What is maple syrup made of?

Vegan maple syrup is made from the sap of maple trees and doesn’t contain any meat products. Though it is a “syrup” made from a tree, it doesn’t have any meat products.

The main cooking ingredient of maple syrup is potable water, sugar, and cane juice. Since these vegan ingredients do not contain animal products, they are considered vegan.

But, some brands may use honey instead of sugar when making maple syrup.

Maple syrup is made from boiled sap collected from maple trees. The sap is concentrated into syrup through a process called evaporative concentration.

This process takes about ten days. Once the syrup has been produced, it is filtered and bottled.

How To Tell If Maple Syrup Is Vegan?

The best way to check if maple syrup is vegan is to look at the vegan-friendly ingredient list. Some brands may use honey instead of sugar.

But, if you want to be 100% sure, you should search for “vegan” on the label. There should be a symbol indicating that it is certified as vegan by the Non-GMO Project.

Check the label if you want to know whether a particular maple syrup brand is vegan.

If you see “maple sugar” as an ingredient, then there is a high probability that the maple product is not vegan. If the label states “maple flavouring,” it will most likely be vegan.

Always read the label. You’re better off using artificial maple syrup as a vegan than real organic maple syrup.

How is maple syrup made?

Natural maple syrup is produced when sap from maple trees is collected and boiled. The process begins at the spring when the sap starts flowing from the tree.

  • The litres of maple sap is collected from the tree using a spout called a tap.
  • Once the sap has been collected, it is boiled down until it becomes thick and syrupy. This process takes about two weeks.
  • After boiling, the sap is strained through a filter to remove debris from the sap.
  • The filtered litre of maple syrup sap is then bottled for sale.

Is Maple Syrup Suitable For Vegans?

Maple syrup is suitable for vegans because maple trees produce sap that extracts maple sugar. There are also vegan recipes that use maple syrup as a natural sweetener substitute.

Maple syrup has a strong flavour, so some prefer agave nectar instead. Maple syrup is high in calories and refined sugar, making it unsuitable for those who want to lose weight.

Maple syrup can be enjoyed as part of a plant-based diet, but be sure to buy the purest form possible. Grade B maple syrup is the most refined and is not recommended.

Pure maple syrup is filtered or centrifuged, which means any vitamins are removed. But, most maple syrup is blended with cane sugar content, which is not vegan.
